What We Believe

What We Believe

About God

  • There is only one God, and He exists in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • The Father, Son, and Spirit have distinct roles.
  • God is the creator of all things and the ruler of the universe.
  • God's love for us is limitless, and He desires to restore our relationship with Him.
  • God sent His Son to set us free from sin and death and to make us holy.

Genesis 1:26–27; Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 3:13–17; 28:19; John 3:16; Romans 1:18–20; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Ephesians 4:6

About Jesus Christ

  • The eternal Word became flesh, both fully human and fully God, and dwelt among men as Jesus the Messiah.
  • Jesus was born of the virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit.
  • He lived a sinless life, teaching about what it means to live for God and ministering to and healing countless people.
  • Jesus died on the cross for all our sins and was buried
  • Jesus was raised back to life three days later, claiming victory over sin, death, and Satan.
  • Ascended to heaven, Jesus now sits at the Father’s right hand, ruling over the Kingdom of God.
  • Through Jesus's sacrifice, our relationship with God has been restored and we have been reconciled to Him.

About The Holy Spirit

  • Christ sent the Holy Spirit after His ascension to provide special miraculous aid to the Church in the first century.
  • The Holy Spirit reveals, convicts, comforts, and guides.
  • The Spirit’s first work is in the revelation, inspiration, and preservation of the Holy Scriptures.
  • The Spirit regenerates and transforms Christians by His power through the Word which He inspired, resulting in the fruit of the Spirit.

About God's Word

  • God inspired the 66 books of the Bible, meaning they are His words: authoritative and inerrant. The Bible reveals who God is, who mankind is, and what our purpose is.
  • The Bible is a diverse collection of various literary and historical writings, written thousands of years ago by over forty authors across 1500 years. Yet despite their complexities, they can be understood, trusted, and followed.
  • We seek to interpret Scripture not through our feelings or opinions, but through the original meaning of the text and how it applies to our lives today.
  • Because the Holy Spirit inspired all 66 books, we honor Jesus's Lordship by submitting our lives to all that God has for us in them as the only source of spiritual authority.

Deuteronomy 4:1–6; 6:1–9; Matthew 5–7; 15:6–9; John 12:44–50; Acts 2:42; 17:10 –11; 2 Timothy 3:16–4:4; 2 Peter 1:20–21

About The Gospel

  • God made human beings in His image so that we could enjoy a relationship with Him.
  • We damage the image by disobeying God, and thereby falling short of the glory of God, a process called sin. Every single person has sinned, except Jesus Christ.
  • Our sins separate us eternally from God and result in our death, and we can’t do anything to fix this separation or death.
  • The Gospel is the good news about Jesus Christ and the hope for reconciliation we have in Him:
  • The Father sent His Son into the world to take on human flesh and redeem us.
  • The Son came as the promised Messiah of the Old Testament, ushering in the kingdom of God; He died for our sins according to Scripture, was buried, and raised on the third day.
  • He defeated sin and death and ascended to heaven.
  • Through the Spirit, we are transformed and sanctified (made holy).
  • We cannot earn our salvation, but rather it is by grace we are saved, through faith.
  • Jesus will return someday, and just as He was raised, we will also be raised to live eternally with God!

About Salvation

  • When we commit to trust and follow Jesus, we express this faith by repenting from sin, confessing His name, and receiving baptism.
  • Faith, repentance, obedience, and confession are the way of life for the Christian.
  • Baptism (immersion in water) is a one-time expression of faith in God which saves us by connecting us with the blood of Jesus Christ and clothing us in His righteousness.
  • Baptism is the means of entry into the church, and it marks our commitment to regularly die to ourselves and to live for Christ.

About the Body of Christ

  • The Body of Christ is also known as the Church, made up of local churches. Jesus Christ is the Head of the Body, meaning He is the highest authority.
  • A church is not a building, but a community of believers who come together to worship and praise God as His kingdom on earth.
  • The Hondo church is governed by a group of shepherds (also known as elders), assisted by deacons and ministers, ordained by God to lead the local church according to God's will.
  • We are a diverse group of believers who seek to strengthen, encourage, and equip each other.
  • We meet every week to worship our God together.
